Viola d'Amore

A personal model Viola d'Amore made in the historical European viol shaped outline, with a carved arched top and flat / canted back.

There are 7 bowed upper strings, over 7 lower non-bowed resonance strings.

The top is delicately carved from lovely old Engelmann Spruce, 1/4 cut, bookmatched, and of a beautiful fine even grain. There is an inlaid rosette carved from Black Walnut with an abalone shell inlay in the shape of a heart.

The flat back with matching sides are from a Catalpa tree that grew local to where I live; wood I had milled up 30 years ago, flat sawn and showing a beautiful grain.

The carved cherub head, elongated peg box, and neck attachment are carved from a single piece of 1/4 European Maple. The fingerboard and tailpiece are carved from Jatoba wood.

The instrument is varnished a warm reddish-brown over a yellow amber ground, slightly antiqued to pronounce figure and grain.

This Viola d'Amore plays with a warm, resonant, etherial tone; magnified by the sympathetic vibration of the 7 resonance strings.
